Cognac Matt Lacquer Kitchen — A 12 mm Micro-Frame Front

Cognac is the warmest colour a kitchen can carry without reading as wood, and it is the one brown that survives a north-facing room: a dark amber-brown at mid value with a red-brown undertone, close to RAL 8029 but pulled back from copper so it does not turn orange under a warm bulb. The risk with a brown kitchen is that it looks like a veneer that has been painted over, which is why the front here does the work. It is a 12mm micro-frame: a slim flat frame machined from the same 19mm board as the centre panel, with the panel recessed 4mm behind it — not an applied moulding, not a routed groove, one piece of MDF sprayed as one piece. From a metre it gives the run a fine inner line that catches a soft shadow; from across the room it reads as a flat front, because 12mm is narrow enough not to become a shaker. The comparison that matters is against the other browns and the other frames in the range: the walnut solid-wood kitchen is real grain and darker, the terracotta face-frame is orange and framed at 70mm, the burgundy is red-purple, and the slim shakers are 20mm on a different cabinet. Cognac in a 12mm frame sits between all of them, and it is the only one that is a warm mid-brown lacquer with no grain at all. Behind the front it is an 18mm plywood carcass on 32mm system drilling, Blum soft-close throughout, 720mm base boxes on a 100mm recessed plinth, and a 20mm warm-grey quartz top with a fine speckle. A 20-piece OEM/ODM programme for importers, kitchen studios and apartment developers.

  • Deep cognac at 5 gloss units — a dark amber-brown at mid value, roughly RAL 8029 but pulled back from copper, matched to a supplied sample so it does not drift orange under 2700K light or ashy under 4000K
  • Two-coat polyurethane lacquer, chalky in appearance but cross-linked and sealed, so it resists cooking grease and wipe-down cleaners where a matt wall paint absorbs them
  • 12mm micro-frame machined from the same 19mm MDF board as the centre panel and sprayed as one piece — not an applied moulding and not a routed groove, so there is no joint line to open or collect grease
  • 4mm recessed centre panel behind the frame, which is what produces the fine inner shadow line at a metre and still reads as a flat front from across the room
  • Uniform 3mm shadow gaps held by the hinge and runner drilling rather than site adjustment, so six fronts read as one plane with parallel lines instead of six panels at six heights
  • Slim dark-bronze bar pulls — 160mm on doors and 320mm on drawer banks, PVD-coated so they do not fade to a flat black or tarnish like untreated brass near a hob, mounted horizontally near the top edge to keep sight lines level
  • 100mm recessed plinth in the same cognac, set back 60mm, so the base run appears to float and the toe-kick disappears in low light instead of reading as a brown band
  • 18mm plywood carcass with sealed ABS edges, 8mm back panel and 32mm system drilling — plywood rather than chipboard, because a recessed panel front shows any rack in the box as a widening gap
  • 720mm base carcasses on adjustable legs behind the plinth for a 900mm finished worktop height; 330mm deep wall units at 720mm high with one adjustable shelf on the 32mm system
  • 20mm warm-grey quartz worktop with a fine mineral speckle, 620mm deep, square edge and a 100mm matching upstand — warm grey rather than cool grey, so the cognac keeps its warmth instead of going muddy against the stone
  • Blum TandemBox soft-close drawers rated 30 to 70kg and Blum clip-on concealed hinges with three-way adjustment; a cost-equivalent Chinese runner set on the same 32mm drilling for entry price points
  • Standard module widths of 300 / 400 / 500 / 600 / 900 / 1000mm with 570mm deep base boxes, so a run plans on a 100mm grid and still lands on standard sink and appliance apertures without a bespoke carcass

Product FAQ

How is this different from the walnut, terracotta and burgundy kitchens already in the range?
By material, temperature and frame. The walnut solid-wood kitchen is real grain and reads darker and cooler; the terracotta face-frame is orange and carries a 70mm frame; the burgundy is a red-purple. Cognac here is a warm mid-brown lacquer with no grain at all, and it is the first front in the range to use a 12mm micro-frame rather than a 20mm slim shaker, a 45mm frame or a flat slab. If a programme wants the warmth of a wood kitchen with the colour accuracy of a spray finish, this is that route.
Is the 12mm frame structural or just decorative?
One piece, so it is neither applied nor structural in the veneer sense — the 12mm frame and the 4mm recessed panel are machined out of a single 19mm MDF board and sprayed as one door. That is what stops the two failure modes of applied mouldings: a visible joint line that opens with humidity, and a grease trap along the mitre. It also means the door cannot delaminate at the frame, because there is no second component to come away.
Will a dark brown kitchen make a small German kitchen look smaller?
Less than black or charcoal, more than sand or greige. The value sits at mid rather than dark, and the recessed panel breaks up the surface so the run does not read as one heavy block. Where a room is genuinely narrow, the same programme runs the cognac on the base units with a light wall unit above, which is a two-tone split we can quote inside the same 20 pieces.
Does a matte lacquer show fingerprints and kitchen grease?
Less than gloss, more than a textured melamine. Matte at 5 gloss units scatters light instead of reflecting it, so fingerprints do not read the way they do on high gloss. The real risk is aerosolised cooking fat near the hob, which is why the topcoat is polyurethane rather than a matt paint: it wipes clean without burnishing the sheen. An anti-fingerprint topcoat is available for high-traffic rental programmes.
How is the colour approved before production?
Three routes: match to a RAL or NCS reference, match to a physical sample you send, or we spray three 200 × 300mm panels in adjacent values and courier them for approval. Production does not start until a signed panel comes back, and on repeat orders we keep both the approved panel and the batch formulation on file.
How does a 20-piece order work, and what are the lead times?
Twenty pieces per model, and the 20 can be split across widths, the two-panel layout and a two-tone split. A single paid sample kitchen is available for evaluation. Production runs 30 to 35 days after colour approval, and sea freight to Hamburg or Bremerhaven adds 30 to 35 days. We are a 20,000 m² factory in Jiangshan, Zhejiang, supplying several of the world's ten largest building-material brands on the same lines.
