Compact Apartment Kitchen — A 2.4m Galley Built for One-Bed Units and Village Conversions

Most kitchen catalogues are photographed in rooms that do not exist in the buildings being built. A one-bed apartment kitchen is 2.4 metres of wall, one tall unit, a sink that has to sit under a window that is already in the drawings, and a benchtop that has to survive a tenant who never opens the rangehood. This run is designed to that drawing rather than to a showroom: four 600mm base units, three 600mm wall units at 700mm above the bench, one 600mm tall unit carrying the oven, and a 20mm compact laminate top with a 100mm upstand — the specification that passes a project audit without a stone mason on site. The module grid is the important part. Every unit is a 600mm multiple with a 3mm front gap held across the range, so a run can be shortened or extended on site by the joiner without ordering a custom carcass, and so the same door front fits the kitchen in apartment 204 and apartment 811. Bases are pale natural oak veneer with a horizontal grain; wall cabinets and the tall unit are matt warm-white lacquer, because in a small room the eye needs the dark weight below and the light mass above. Carcasses are 18mm plywood rather than MDF for the same reason they are in our project vanities: a sealed apartment kitchen with a recirculating rangehood holds moisture and heat against the carcass. Flat-packed in unit-numbered packs for goods-lift delivery, or assembled and corner-protected where the contractor wants finished boxes on the floor. A 20-kitchen-per-model OEM/ODM programme for developers, joiners and fit-out contractors.

  • 2.4m galley as a fixed drawing: four 600mm base units, three 600mm wall units at 700mm above the bench, one 600mm tall unit with an oven cavity — a run that fits a one-bed apartment wall without a custom carcass
  • 600mm module grid with a 3mm front gap held across the whole range, so a run can be shortened or extended on site and the same front still fits every unit type in the building
  • 18mm plywood carcass with sealed ABS edges and 32mm system drilling, because a sealed apartment kitchen with a recirculating rangehood pushes heat and moisture against the panels all year
  • Two-material front: pale natural oak veneer on the bases with a horizontal grain, matt warm-white lacquer on the wall cabinets and tall unit — the weight below, the light mass above, which is what makes 2.4m of kitchen in a small room read as a room rather than a corridor
  • 20mm compact laminate benchtop with a 20mm square edge and a 100mm upstand — specified instead of stone so the top can be cut and re-cut on site, takes a hot pan without a trivet and does not need a mason to install
  • Flat-packed in unit-numbered packs for goods-lift delivery, or assembled and corner-protected for direct-to-floor distribution; plinths, fillers and end panels shipped as a separate labelled pack so nothing has to be cut from a door front on site

Product FAQ

Why specify a 2.4m run instead of letting the contractor cut down a standard kitchen?
Because cutting down is where project kitchens lose money. A standard run that gets trimmed on site produces a filler nobody planned, an end panel cut from a door front, and a benchtop that no longer lands on the module grid. A 2.4m run on a 600mm grid is a drawing, not a range — the joiner receives units that match the wall, and if the wall is 2.5m the filler is a 100mm labelled part rather than a chop saw decision.
Is compact laminate good enough for an apartment kitchen?
For rental and multi-unit work it is usually the better commercial choice than stone. It takes a hot pan without a trivet, it can be cut and re-cut on site with a standard blade, it does not chip at an exposed edge the way a thin porcelain slab can, and it does not require a mason to install. Where a project wants stone or sintered surfaces for the premium units, we quote the same carcass with a stone top so the two specifications sit side by side.
Why oak veneer on the bases and lacquer above?
Because a small room needs the visual weight at the bottom. A full run in one pale finish disappears into the wall and the kitchen reads as a corridor; oak below and matt white above gives the bench line something to sit on. Practically, veneer also hides the scuffs that a bench-height front collects, while the wall cabinets stay above the damage zone and can carry the cleaner lacquer finish.
Can you supply 300 or 400 kitchens for a village conversion?
Yes, with the same batch discipline as our project vanities: one approved oak and one approved white held as physical samples, retained fronts with the order file, and unit-numbered packs so a goods lift does not need a sorting table. Send the unit mix and the wall dimensions and we will map the run to each apartment type before quoting.
Do you supply ovens, cooktops and sinks?
No — appliances, sinks, tapware and any plumbing product requiring certification in Australia stay with your nominated suppliers. We prepare the cavities, the ventilation path and the cut-outs to your appliance and sink templates, and we mark each cabinet with the appliance it serves so the electrical and plumbing trades are not guessing on site.
