Warm Greige Matte Lacquer Kitchen with Fluted Tall Units and Brass Detail

Greige is the colour buyers ask for when neither white nor grey will do, and it fails for a specific reason: get the pigment wrong and it turns pink under a warm LED, or turns green under a north-facing window. The reference here is a grey-beige at roughly 4 gloss units where the beige is carried by a touch of yellow oxide rather than red, so it holds its neutrality under both 3000K and 4000K light. What keeps the run from reading as a flat beige wall is the tall unit: 20 mm pitch V-groove fluting the full 2100 mm height, cut into the door rather than applied as battens, which gives a vertical rhythm and a shadow line that a plain slab cannot produce. Brass is deliberately restrained — 12 mm slim bars, satin not polished — because a greige run with heavy brass goes from current to dated in one step. The whole programme sits on an 18 mm plywood carcass with a 20 mm quartz top, so the surface language is soft and the construction is not.

  • Warm greige matte lacquer at 3 to 5 gloss units on 18 mm MDF, pigment balanced with yellow oxide rather than red so it stays neutral under both 3000K and 4000K lighting instead of turning pink
  • Flat slab doors and drawer fronts at 18 mm with a 3 mm even reveal, so the run reads as one plane; the tall unit is the only textured element and therefore the visual anchor
  • Fluted tall-unit doors routed in a 20 mm pitch V-groove at 3 mm depth through the full 2100 mm height — cut into the 18 mm door, not applied battens, so there is no edge to lift or collect grease
  • Slim brushed brass bar pulls, 12 mm diameter at 160 and 320 mm centres, solid zinc alloy with a satin lacquered finish that resists tarnish; matte black and brushed nickel on the same drilling
  • 20 mm sand-white quartz worktop with a fine speckle, square edge and a 40 mm upstand, cut to the run at 600 mm depth; sintered stone and compact laminate on the same template
  • 18 mm waterproof plywood carcass with sealed ABS edges and an 8 mm back panel as standard for export, or 18 mm E1 MFC for dry installs — both on the same 32 mm system drilling
  • Blum soft-close concealed hinges at 110 degrees with three-way adjustment and full-extension soft-close runners rated 30 kg — standard specification, not an upgrade line
  • Recessed 60 mm greige plinth with a continuous shadow gap, adjustable legs with a 20 mm levelling range, and a 600 mm tall unit sized for a built-in oven plus a pull-out larder below

Product FAQ

What exactly is greige, and why does it go wrong so often?
Greige is a grey with beige warmth in it — the point is that it should read as neither. It goes wrong in one of two directions: too much red oxide and the cabinets look pink under a 3000K downlight, too much green and they look drab beside a north-facing window. The pigment balance that works is carried by yellow oxide with a small black and umber component, which holds its neutrality across the 3000K to 4000K range most kitchens actually use. Because the shift is a lighting effect rather than a paint defect, we send a 200 x 200 mm lacquered chip and recommend the client view it in the room at night before signing off a 50-piece custom run.
Is the fluting cut into the door or applied on top of it?
Cut in. Each tall-unit door is routed with a 20 mm pitch, 3 mm deep V-groove through the full 2100 mm height before lacquering, so the flute is part of the door panel. Applied battens are cheaper and common in the market, but they leave a line at every batten edge where grease and dust collect, and in a kitchen next to a hob that line is what fails first. The trade-off is that a routed door cannot be re-faced later — if the client wants a different look in five years, the door is replaced, not resurfaced. On a 600 mm door the flute adds roughly 8 minutes of CNC and finishing time versus a slab.
Will brass hardware tarnish in a kitchen with steam and grease?
Not in this specification. The pulls are solid zinc alloy with a satin lacquered brass finish, so the lacquer is the barrier and the surface does not oxidise or take a green cast near a hob. What it will not do is patinate — lacquered brass is a fixed colour. If a project explicitly wants the living finish, we supply unlacquered brass on request and would then keep those pulls at least 600 mm from the hob. Satin rather than polished matters here for a second reason: a polished brass bar on a greige door produces a hard specular highlight that reads as chrome at a distance, which is the dated look most briefs are trying to avoid.
Can the same programme be split into a two-tone kitchen?
Yes, and it is the most common way greige gets specified. The usual split is greige on the base run and wall units with a pale oak or off-white tall unit, or the reverse — a greige tall unit against white bases, which is how the fluting becomes the focal point rather than a background texture. Because the door profile, hinge drilling and carcass are identical across the range, the two colours meet cleanly at a corner or a filler. Custom RAL starts at 50 pcs in one colour; a 20-piece order can be split 10 and 10 across the standard swatch range at no tooling cost.
How is a flat-packed order checked and installed on site?
Every carton carries a module code that matches the fitting sequence sheet, and the sheet is ordered by wall rather than by cabinet type, so the installer opens cartons in the order they are needed instead of staging the whole kitchen on the floor. Fluted tall-unit doors ship with a rigid face board inside the carton because a 2100 mm routed door is the part most likely to arrive with a bruised edge. We include 2 percent spare edge banding, one spare hinge per 20 doors and touch-up lacquer matched to the batch. Orders above 60 pcs can hold a production slot for a fixed install date; both flat-packed and assembled options are quoted FOB Ningbo or CIF.
