Matte Black Slim-Shaker Kitchen Cabinets with Brushed Brass Hardware

Black cabinetry fails for one of two reasons: the door profile is too wide, so a full run reads as heavy panelling, or the finish is a gloss that turns every fingerprint and every reflection into noise. The slim shaker answers the first — a 20 mm frame instead of the 70 mm of a classic shaker keeps the shadow line fine and lets the door read as a plane with an edge rather than a picture frame. The matte lacquer answers the second: a 3 to 5 gloss unit surface scatters light instead of mirroring it, which is why a black kitchen in this finish stays calm under a window. Brass is the part that stops it going cold, and it is fitted as slim 12 mm bar pulls rather than cup handles so the horizontal rhythm of the run is not broken.

  • 20 mm slim-shaker frame with a recessed flat centre panel — roughly one third of a classic shaker frame, which keeps a 3 m run reading as cabinetry rather than joinery panelling
  • Matte black lacquer at 3 to 5 gloss units on 18 mm MDF, spray-applied in a two-coat base and top system, so the surface scatters light instead of reflecting it and finger marks wipe off rather than smear
  • 18 mm waterproof plywood carcass option with sealed edges and an 8 mm back panel, or 18 mm E1 MFC for dry kitchens — both on the same 32 mm system drilling
  • Brushed brass slim bar pulls, 12 mm diameter at 160 and 320 mm centres, solid zinc alloy with a lacquered brass finish that resists tarnish in a kitchen environment
  • 20 mm white quartz worktop with a fine grey vein and a straight square edge, cut to the run with a 600 mm depth and a 40 mm upstand as standard
  • Blum soft-close concealed hinges at 110 degrees with three-way adjustment, and full-extension soft-close runners at 30 kg on the drawer banks — standard, not an upgrade line
  • Recessed 60 mm matte black plinth with a continuous shadow gap, plus a 900 mm tall unit at the run end for the oven housing and the pantry pull-outs

Product FAQ

Does a black kitchen show dust and fingerprints more than a light one?
It shows dust more and fingerprints less — which is the opposite of what most buyers expect. A matte surface at 3 to 5 gloss units scatters light, so greasy finger contact does not print a visible mark the way it does on gloss; what it does show is a fine film of flour or plaster dust against the dark ground. In practice a quick dry microfibre pass once a week is enough. Gloss black is the finish that fails, because every ridge in a fingerprint catches a specular highlight.
What exactly makes this a slim shaker rather than a shaker?
The frame width. A classic shaker runs a 60 to 70 mm raised frame around the panel; this is 20 mm at the same 6 mm recess depth. That changes the proportion of the door from roughly 1:3 frame-to-panel to 1:8, so on a 600 mm door the frame reads as an edge detail instead of a border. It also means the shadow line between adjacent doors stays thin, which is what stops a full-height black run from looking like a wall of panels.
Is brass hardware a problem in a kitchen with steam and grease?
Not in this specification. The pulls are solid zinc alloy with a lacquered brass finish rather than raw brass, so the lacquer is the barrier and the surface does not oxidise or take on a green cast near a hob. The trade-off is that lacquered brass is a fixed colour — it will not patinate the way unlacquered brass does. If a project wants the living finish, we supply unlacquered brass on request, and we would then recommend keeping the pulls at least 600 mm from the hob.
Can the same door be supplied in another colour for a two-tone scheme?
Yes, and it is the most common way this door gets specified. The usual split is matte black on the base run and a pale oak or off-white on the wall units, which keeps the visual weight low where the room is tall. Because the frame profile is identical, the two colours meet cleanly at the corner. Custom RAL is available from 50 pcs in one colour, and a two-colour order of 20 pcs can be split 10 and 10 across the standard swatch range.
How is a flat-packed order checked on site?
Every carton carries a module code that matches the fitting sequence sheet, and the sequence sheet is ordered by wall rather than by cabinet type, so the installer opens cartons in the order they are needed. We ship 2 percent spare edge banding and one spare hinge per 20 doors. For assembled orders the crates are numbered to the same sequence. Both options are quoted FOB Ningbo or CIF, and we can hold a production slot for a fixed install date on orders above 60 pcs.
