Kitchen Sideboard & Buffet — Reeded Oak Doors, Black Marble Top

A sideboard is the piece that decides whether an open-plan kitchen reads as one room or two. Run it in the same greige as the base cabinets and the dining end of the space disappears into the kitchen; run it in a contrast oak and the two zones fight. This 1800 mm unit takes the first route and puts the interest in the door face instead of the colour: a matte greige lacquer body with four solid white oak doors, each milled with a fine vertical reeded profile that throws a shadow line down the length of the cabinet and picks up whatever light the room has. The centre section drops out into an open niche — a six-bottle oak cradle above, an open shelf below — so the piece works as a serving station without a door to open in the middle of a dinner, and the 20 mm black marble top gives it a surface that can take a hot dish. It is built on the same carcass, hinge drilling and packaging programme as our kitchen runs, so a sideboard can be added to a container without a separate tooling cost.

  • 1800 x 450 x 850 mm as standard (70.9 x 17.7 x 33.5 in) — a 450 mm depth that sits against a dining wall without stealing circulation space, and 850 mm top height so it lines up with a 900 mm kitchen run minus the worktop
  • Matte greige lacquer body on 18 mm plywood, with the four door fronts in solid white oak milled with a fine vertical reeded profile — the grooves are cut after the door is finished, so the shadow line stays crisp and does not fill with lacquer
  • 20 mm black marble top with white veining, honed finish, 20 mm overhang on the front and sides; alternative tops — sintered stone, white quartz, or solid oak butcher block
  • Open centre niche with a six-bottle solid oak wine cradle and one adjustable open shelf — the serving-station detail that makes the piece work in a dining room rather than only in a kitchen
  • Three soft-close drawers in the centre column behind the niche, 18 mm sides and 8 mm base, full-extension runners with a 25 kg load rating for cutlery and linen
  • Two adjustable shelves behind each pair of doors, on 32 mm system drilling so shelf heights can be reset on site without new holes
  • Recessed dark bronze edge pulls machined into the door stiles — nothing protrudes into a walkway, and the same pull is available in brushed brass and matte black on the same cut-out
  • Anti-tip wall anchor and a levelling plinth with a ±10 mm range supplied as standard; the anchor is not optional on a 1800 mm unit in a household with children
  • Optional 24 V LED strip under the top overhang or inside the open niche, warm white 3000 K, with a concealed driver bay in the plinth — IP44 rated for a kitchen environment
  • KD flat-pack in two cartons with the marble top crated separately, so a 1800 mm piece ships on a standard pallet instead of needing a two-man lift through a finished house

Product FAQ

Should a sideboard match the kitchen cabinets or contrast with them?
It depends on the sight line. If the sideboard sits inside the kitchen run and you can see both in one glance, match the body colour to the base cabinets and let the door face carry the difference — which is what this unit does, greige body with an oak reeded front. If the sideboard is in a separate dining zone or across a corridor, a full contrast piece in oak or a dark lacquer reads as intentional furniture rather than a leftover cabinet. What fails is a partial match: a body that is nearly the kitchen colour but not quite, which reads as a mistake from every angle. We quote both the matching and the contrasting body on the same door programme, so the decision is a finish choice, not a new tooling cost.
Is a marble top practical in a kitchen and dining area?
Honed black marble is practical for a serving surface as long as it is sealed and not used as a chopping board. It takes a hot dish, it does not scorch like a laminate, and the honed finish hides the fine scratches that a polished surface shows after a year of plates being slid across it. What it does not like is acid — wine, lemon, vinegar — left standing, which is exactly what happens on a sideboard used as a drinks station, so we seal it at the factory and recommend a re-seal at twelve months. Where the client wants zero maintenance we quote the same drawing in sintered stone, which is non-porous and takes the same 20 mm edge.
Can the open niche be replaced with doors or a different internal layout?
Yes — the niche is a carcass configuration, not a fixed part. The same 1800 mm body can be built as four full doors with no break, as two doors with a central open shelf column, or with the wine cradle swapped for a pull-out tray or a closed drawer bank. The door and drilling programme does not change, so a mixed order — some units with the niche, some without — still runs as one production batch. Send a sketch of the internal layout with the order and we return a carcass drawing for approval before cutting.
How does a 1800 mm sideboard ship without damage?
It ships KD in two cartons: the carcass panels and doors in one, the plinth, hardware and shelves in the other, both with corner protection and foam. The marble top travels separately on a moulded cradle inside a crated carton, because a 1800 mm stone slab that is stacked flat against a carcass carton will crack at the first pallet impact. Assembly on site is 30 to 40 minutes with a screwdriver and the supplied cam fittings, and the anti-tip anchor is fitted last, after the unit is levelled.
