60-Inch Makeup-Station Double Vanity — One Quartz Top, Stepped Over a Knee Space

Sixty inches is the size US master baths are actually built to, and it is also the size where a double vanity wastes the most space. Two 450mm drawer banks and two basins leave roughly 600mm in the middle that nobody can stand in front of, so it fills up with a laundry basket or a stool that never gets put away. This vanity uses that middle. The white quartz top is cut as one slab with a 100mm step: it sits at 860mm over the two basin wings and drops to 760mm across a 620mm centre opening, with the carcass set back so a stool or a chair slides underneath and the user sits to do makeup, contact lenses or a child's hair. Because it is one slab, there is no joint at the step and no silicone line to grey — the profile is machined and polished as a single piece, which is also why the step has to be cut before the sink apertures are CNC'd. The fronts are warm white oak veneer on 18mm plywood, deliberately plain: no beading, no fluting, no metal trim, because the stepped profile is already the detail. Two 450mm banks of deep drawers, 3mm shadow gaps held by the runner drilling, Blum TandemBox soft-close, and a steel hanging rail rated well above the loaded weight of 1.5 metres of stone. Sized for US new-build and remodel programmes at 1524mm, with 1372 and 1676mm versions on the same tooling and a 20-piece OEM/ODM minimum.

  • One 22mm white quartz slab cut with a 100mm step: 860mm counter height over both basin wings, 760mm across the 620mm centre opening — a single machined and polished piece, so there is no joint, no silicone bead and no differential movement at the step
  • The centre 620mm is a genuine knee space, not a shallow recess: the carcass behind it is set back 200mm and left open, so a 450mm-high stool or a dining chair goes under and a seated user has somewhere to put their knees
  • Two 450mm drawer banks flank the opening — four deep drawers in total, 180mm and 240mm internal heights, full-extension Blum TandemBox soft-close runners rated 40kg per bank and drilled on the same jig so the 3mm shadow gaps stay parallel after a hundred cycles
  • Warm white oak veneer at 0.6mm on an 18mm MR-MDF substrate, sliced from the same flitch per order so the grain runs continuously across both banks, with a matte open-pore lacquer at 4 gloss units rather than a filled gloss film
  • Deliberately no applied detail on the fronts — no beading, no fluting, no metal edge — because the stepped top is the design; the only line on the face is the 3mm shadow gap and a 2mm chamfer at the drawer edge to stop the veneer chipping on a corner
  • Handleless by finger groove: a 30 x 12mm routed recess under each drawer's top edge, so the front stays a single uninterrupted plane and there is no pull to catch a hip when someone sits down at the centre
  • Two rectangular white ceramic undermount basins, 480 x 340 x 130mm internal, glazed on all faces, fitted with spring clips and a bead of neutral-cure silicone under the slab rather than a visible rim
  • 18mm plywood carcass with sealed ABS edges, 8mm back panel and 32mm system drilling — plywood rather than chipboard, because 1.5 metres of stone plus two full basins will find any rack in the box and show it as a widening shadow gap
  • Steel hanging rail with adjustable hooks, rated well above the loaded weight, supplied with a written wall specification: masonry, concrete or 18mm structural plywood back to studs — never dot-and-dab drywall on its own
  • Optional LED mirror at 1200 x 700mm with anti-fog pad and three colour temperatures at 3000 / 4000 / 6500K, IP44 rated for zone 2, and a plain 5mm silver mirror at a lower cost for volume programmes
  • Standard widths of 1372 / 1524 / 1676mm at 560mm carcass depth, so a US 54, 60 and 66-inch opening all come off the same drilling and the stepped centre stays proportionally 620mm
  • MOQ 20 pieces per model; widths, the oak or painted front and the quartz or sintered top may be mixed inside the 20, while a custom quartz colour or a left-hand step needs a 60-piece run

Product FAQ

Why put a knee space in the middle of a double vanity instead of two separate vanities?
Because two vanities pushed together give you a seam and nothing else. At 1524mm the arithmetic is fixed: two 450mm drawer banks plus two basins leaves about 600mm, and if that middle is cabinet it is cabinet nobody stands in front of — in practice it becomes the laundry basket shelf. Dropping the top 100mm over that span and setting the carcass back converts the same 600mm into a seated station, without adding a piece of furniture to the room. Two separate vanities also mean two tops, two seams at the wall and two freight crates; one stepped slab is one fabrication and one crate.
Is a stepped quartz top structurally sound, or is it two pieces joined?
One piece. The slab is cut from a single 22mm blank, the step is machined on a CNC bridge saw and the profile is hand-polished, so there is no joint at the step to open, stain or telegraph through. That is also why the sink apertures are cut after the step: the step removes stiffness, and the two wings have to be treated as separate spans when the apertures are placed. The 22mm thickness is not decorative — at 20mm the step loses too much of the section over a 620mm span for comfort with two basins cut into it.
Will the oak veneer survive a wet bathroom?
It will if the substrate and the edges are right. The veneer is 0.6mm sliced oak on 18mm MR-MDF, not on chipboard, and every edge is sealed before the front is sprayed; the lacquer is an open-pore matte system with a water-repellent sealer rather than a high-gloss film, so moisture moves through slowly and evenly instead of blistering under a skin. What kills veneer in a bathroom is a raw edge at the bottom of a door and a basin that drips onto a front — which is why the finger groove is routed and sealed rather than left as a raw cut.
What actually goes in the two 450mm banks?
Four deep drawers: a 180mm top drawer over a 240mm lower drawer in each bank, on full-extension runners, so a 240mm drawer takes a hairdryer standing up and the top drawer takes a cutlery-style insert for cosmetics. The centre space is left open deliberately — a drawer box under a knee space is unusable once someone is sitting, and a door there just becomes a cupboard you have to get off the stool to open.
Does the makeup-station layout cost more than a standard 60-inch double?
Roughly 8 to 12 per cent more at the same specification, and almost all of it is the stone. A stepped slab takes a longer CNC cycle and more hand polishing than a flat one, and the offcut from the step cannot be reused, so expect a higher material yield loss on the quartz. The carcass is actually cheaper: 620mm of the run has no box, no drawer and no runner. For a programme selling into US master baths the difference is usually absorbed by the retail price of a makeup station, which sits a tier above a plain double.
How does a 20-piece order work, and what are the lead times?
Twenty pieces per model, and the 20 can be split across the three standard widths, the oak or painted front and the quartz or sintered top. A custom quartz colour or a mirrored left-hand step needs a 60-piece run, because both mean a dedicated stone batch or a re-jigged CNC programme. Production is 20 to 35 days after finish and stone approval, and sea freight to Los Angeles, Savannah or New York adds 30 to 35 days. We are a 20,000 m² factory in Jiangshan, Zhejiang, supplying several of the world's ten largest building-material brands on the same lines.
